Blog Wars X Painting Competition - Best Painted Army (pic heavy)

Before I get stuck into my battle reports I'm going to give a run down of the painting competition. Blog Wars 9 saw the introduction of a Best Conversions category but since all the armies were displayed together I felt that some of them were lost in the sea of miniatures. For BWX then, I decided after some discussion that it would be better for the armies to be displayed according to the category they were entering. That meant each player could only enter one category but hopefully gave more people a chance rather than one person scooping several awards *cough*Liam Ainscough*cough*. Today then, I want to run down the Best Painted Army category. There were only five entries here and when I asked why it was apparently because people had seen the eventual winner's army and thought "sod that!".

Apologies for the poor photos but this was due to a combination of bad lighting and Liam using a camera he wasn't used to! I didn't have time to do them myself. If anyone got some better shots please get in touch.

Runners Up
Despite not actually entering the Best Painted competition (instead entering Best Conversions), Graham Sanders managed to get a single vote for his Squats (AM)! The other runners up with Chris Buckle and Michael Corr (great use of old school cardboard scenery) both with Dark Angels (Chris' joined by SM).

Third Place
David Seago took 3rd with his Space Marines (White Scars) and Imperial Knight. David was one of my opponents too so I got plenty of chance to admire his army as it demolished mine!

Second Place
Kevin Stonebanks' Orks took a well deserved second place. I'm just sorry I didn't get to see them properly for myself as I was too busy crunching numbers! I'd have loved to take on a Stompa too!

Winner
The winner was Chris Otterburn with his stunning Tyranids. I can see why they put people off entering but it's still a shame there weren't more armies out there. I certainly spied a few that could've been contenders. Anyway, congratulations to Chris not least because I'd be ready to end it all if I'd had to paint all those gribblies! I'm always jealous of anyone with a Tyranid army as I'd love to have my own but I really don't need to add to the pile of unpainted plastic in my cupboard! Chris continues the fine tradition of his mate Dave Weston who's Tyranids have take a pile of awards at previous BW events.

The next post (on Thursday) will run through the Best Conversions competition so come back for that.

EDIT: Check out Matt Calow's Facebook album for much better pics, particularly of his army...

Blog Wars X - The Aftermath (End of an Era)

Yesterday saw the tenth and final Blog Wars event take place at the NWGC in Stockport..... Wait. Did he say final?!? Yep, that's right (I did hint with the "X"). After a lot of thought and discussion with my wife and friends on the subject I decided that it was time to put Blog Wars to bed. It's been five years now and a lot has changed in that time. Not just with 40K but with my life too. I wasn't even married when I started it and now I have a very nearly two year old!!

The name doesn't make much sense any more since the proportion of bloggers isn't as high. I think it might put people off despite me trying to make it clear it's open to anyone. It's also getting harder to field a special character since GW keep deleting them. Ultimately though, I feel the format is becoming stale and I don't want to get to the point where I don't want to run a tournament because I'm sick of the format. The good news is that I'll still be running two events next year but they'll be very different in some ways and similar in others. Still with the same ethos of friendly gaming over no holds barred competition but I want to try some new ideas out. Fluffageddon will probably still take the November slot (it's up to Matt) but there'll be an event there either way and something new (and hopefully exciting) in June. The guys at BWX already know what's coming but I'd appreciate it if they avoid blogging about it so they don't steal my thunder!

Anyway, I'll be writing a series of posts recapping Blog Wars over the last few years (with pie charts!) but for today let's find out what happened at BWX. Whilst I just said I'm growing tired of the format, I still tried some new things out. Most notably a scoring system I stole from Matt's postponed event, Fluffageddon and a change to the way the painting competition works. I'm sure you all came here to find out your results though so let's get that out of the way:

We managed to have a top three made up of people who've either never played at Blog Wars or never placed. Congratulations to Matthew Grimes on winning with his Chaos Space Marines and Chaos Daemons on just his second visit to BW. I believe he played Ravenwing in the final and was helped massively by his AP3 flamers! Former champion, Dan Lane, finished just out of the podium positions in 4th. Luke Fogg was probably instrumental in denying him the top positions with the near draw in game two!

I'd originally decided that I wouldn't be playing in the event since I'd again sold the full 50 tickets. However, when I had a drop-out, and was unable to sell the final ticket, I cobbled a list together designed to have very few units to make my games as quick as possible. I will, of course, be posting that list and full battle reports but you can see from the results table above that I was nowhere near repeating my mistake of winning it again! It was quite a mission to keep the event running smoothly and concentrate on my games but as far as I know there was no controversy surrounding the results (which is a nice change - let's hope nothing comes up). We did run a little bit behind schedule mind you.

I didn't hear any particular complaints about filthy lists (barring a couple about the Tyranids flyers and people cursing bikes) which is a promising sign. I know of at least a couple of players who told me they'd toned things down a bit this time which I appreciate.

The real winner of the day was Ian Plumpton though, he walked away with a Tau Stormsurge kit (RRP £90), despite finishing 33rd. I think that sums up pretty nicely what BW is supposed to be all about! In fact everyone won something for the first time in BW history as I gave away a set of custom BW objective markers to everyone who showed up!

I was also the recipient of some prizes as Gareth Williams took it upon himself to co-ordinate a whip round netting me my own Stormsurge, a Tau codex and a tenner to "use as a bookmark". I can't thank you guys enough for it. I appreciate that you didn't have to put in and for you all to be so generous is really touching. That hopefully means you all enjoyed yourselves!

A massive thank you to everyone who came to this final outing of Blog Wars, particularly Hendrik and Tobias who managed to make it from Germany despite a Lufthansa strike! It was therefore a little funny that Hendrik won the F.A.T. mat meaning I'll need to ship it out to him rather than him trying to squeeze it into his luggage!

As I've said, stay tuned for a rundown of my battles plus, of course, full details of the painting competition (with a different format this time). I have to say I didn't get chance to look at any of the armies so I'm just hoping Liam managed to get some good pictures for me when I passed him my camera!

Let me finish by saying thank you to the 136 different people who've been to at least one Blog Wars event. I never, in my wildest dreams, expected to be sitting here five years on, retiring the event with back to back 50 player attendances! I appreciate all the support and I hope you'll stick with me whilst I try to do something different.

Armies at Blog Wars X - The Bumper Pie Chart Post!

It's that time again. Time for more crusty pie chart goodness. Since it's the tenth Blog Wars I thought we needed an extra helping of pie so it's going to be a bumper post! For those of you who don't know already, whenever I run Blog Wars I keep a note of the armies that everyone is going to use (I check lists in advance). I then correlate all the data and produce some delicious pie! You can see previous events' pie offerings for BW5, BW6, BW7, BW8 and BW9 by clicking.

Thank you to everyone for submitting their lists. I've now checked them all and fairly early on wished I'd remembered to ask people to send them in Battlescribe format. It made things soo quick last time and I regretted not mentioning it this time around. I think it's going to be a strong tournament but hopefully one that people can still enjoy. There are some tough lists in there but they are balanced by other tough ones in my opinion. At least I hope so, there's no way of telling who will match up against who. Enough of that though. Let's tuck into some pies.

The Pie Charts
As ever let's start by looking at the most popular choices for first detachment at Blog Wars (I'm avoiding using the term "Primary Detachment" as these aren't necessarily). Unlike last time we haven't seen such a huge wave of new books in the run up to the event with Space Marines and Dark Angels coming later in the same month BW9 ran but neither of which having new units to speak of.

Unsurprisingly, Space Marines have remained a popular choice with nearly 1 in 5 of the armies at Blog Wars fielding them as their first detachment. When you factor in the Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Grey Knights and Blood Angels we've got around 40% power armour (45% if we include the CSM). Eldar have a similar share of the pie but Necrons have dropped pretty dramatically with just two lists compared to six at the previous event. There are more Xenos hordes around though with an increased number of Ork and Tyranid players. We've also got our first Khorne Daemonkin army plus an increased number of Mechanicum players. The most notable absence here of course is that there are no Imperial Knights as they can only be taken in Oathsworm formations this time around. The main thing to note again though is there are a huge number of different factions represented so even if you get hammered in all three games it should be by a difference race each time!!

As for second detachments, BWX army selection was a little different as for the first time the same detachment could be taken twice. There were only a handful of players who went for this option though as we'll see later. Anyway, here's a breakdown of the second detachment factions:

The share given over to Imperial Knights hasn't changed from last time but the most interesting thing is that at BW9 we only have half of the armies featuring a second detachment whereas at BWX we're getting over two thirds with a second. Like last time though there's a huge mixture of races with only Harlequins and Adepta Sororitas (Sisters) not represented. Incidentally, Militarum Tempestus aren't technically represented with their own detachment but they do feature in some of the Astra Militarum lists. If nothing else, it seems 7th edition has encouraged variety, at least at Blog Wars anyway.

For comparison's sake let's look at the Imperium vs. Xenos pie chart again:
That appears to be a steady portion of 46% Imperial armies compared to last time but that depends on how you group the Mechanicum armies. I've kept them separate here but over half the armies would be "Imperial" if you included them. The chunk of Chaos armies has increased but we've lost about a quarter of the Xenos contingent. Pretty surprising when you consider how strong Tau, Eldar and Necrons are (even without the new Tau book).

Finally, let's look at Lords of War again. They made their first appearance at BW9 with no small measure of controversy so how many can you expect to see at BWX?

Well actually, numbers are down from last time. Not by a huge amount but they're certainly less popular. That may be because I've limited the use of Imperial Knights to two but nothing else has changed. I think it's probably a good thing though. Even so, let's look at which LoW we'll be seeing:

I'm sure people will be pleased to see that Imperial Knight numbers are down from 15 to 7 with only one army (I think) having two of them. I expect they'll be a much less significant part of the event this time and I'd be surprised if we see them on the top tables at the end of the day. It's shame that we aren't getting any Baneblades or Khornemowers but I am glad that there'll at least be one Stompa still!

Special Characters
I've got some more posts planned for after the event looking at the evolution of SCs over the last five years of Blog Wars but they remain a compulsory part of a BW army. Thankfully we haven't seen any more deleted since the last event but nor have we seen any come back sadly. There's still just a handful of armies without them and once again Kor'sarro Khan is a favourite. This time though he's only as popular as Arjac and Yriel, both of which also appear 3 times. There are some left-field choices in there too which is always nice to see but I'll not spoil them for you.

Incidentally, I never did get around to offering an incentive for taking an unloved SC that hasn't been fielded before. My backup list does feature Ragnar though since he's never made an appearance. Of course, he still won't have unless I'm forced to play by odd numbers on the day. I'm hoping this isn't necessary though. Speaking of which....

Attendance
We had originally sold the full 50 but I've had a drop-out and despite my best efforts I've not been able to sell the final ticket. We may event lose another couple because Lufthansa are talking about strikes which would prevent our two international players from attending. Booooo!

Still, I can't complain about the support you guys continue to give this event. It's reassuring after the comparatively low numbers at BW8. It's also a big deal for the Winter event which has often seen lower numbers compared to the Summer one.

Bonus Pie Charts
Since this is the tenth event I thought I'd throw in some bonus pie charts for what I consider to be interesting things. Since I've allowed two of the same detachment we've seen an increase in uptake of a second detachment:

Adding up all the detachments together, and ignoring the 15 "gaps" where just one detachment was taken, here's a look at the types of detachment people are fielding:

It's interesting that just over half of the detachments are CADs. Of course, some armies don't have the option to take anything else but still, with all of the formations and such around it's still interesting (you may disagree). I'm also pretty surprised that there are still people using allied detachments but I suppose they do still offer the advantages of Objective Secured and a single Troop. Finally for these bonus pies here's one showing the combinations of detachments we're seeing:

Awww a pretty rainbow.... ahem. There's a surprisingly low number of double CAD armies and not all of them are the same faction. Of all the armies, about a third feature two detachments from the same faction though. Damn, should've done another pie chart to show that!

Conclusion
Right, that's more than enough pie for one night. I'll be victim of a popular football chant if I put anymore up. I hope you enjoy them in all their circular segmental loveliness in the same way that I do. As always I'm looking forward to the event and I hope you all are too. It's going to be interesting to see who comes out on top of the pile.

At this point I'd normally say "stay tuned for the prize announcement post" but I'm not going to this time as I'll keep it all a surprise for the big day. Suffice to say there's a little something extra because it's the tenth event. See you all in a few days! Time for me to go and cut out hundreds of bits of paper!
